Some engagement sessions feel special the moment you walk in, and Megan and James’ session at Wonder Bar in Beacon was exactly that.
It was one of those winter days where the cold settles deep into your bones. We had just experienced the coldest winter yet, and everything outside felt frozen and quiet. Instead of fighting the weather, Megan and James leaned into something different – something warm, intimate, and completely them.

And honestly? It couldn’t have been more perfect.
Wonder Bar gave us the entire space to ourselves, which made the whole evening feel like stepping into a little pocket of time that belonged only to them. Tucked right next to the Beacon Theater, the bar has this cozy, nostalgic atmosphere that made the session feel less like photos and more like a date night I just happened to tag along for.

Which, if you know me – is exactly how I like it.
There’s something so special about photographing couples in a space that actually reflects who they are. Megan and James love hard, you can see it in the way they laugh together, the way they lean into each other without thinking, the way they exist so naturally side by side.
Truthfully, they could have stood in front of any backdrop and created magic simply by being themselves. But this one felt different.

Maybe it was the warmth of the bar compared to the snow piling up outside. Maybe it was the quiet calm of having the space to ourselves. Maybe it was the way the dim lights wrapped around them like a story unfolding. It felt intentional, honest, and most importantly, it felt like them.
This time of year can be a slower season for photographers, and if I’m being honest, that can sometimes put a damper on creativity. When the pace quiets down, it’s easy to feel a little stuck or disconnected from the work you love.
But sessions like this remind me why I started.

Not only did I get the chance to stretch my creativity and do something a little different, but I got to slow down and really connect with Megan and James ahead of their wedding later this year, and that part means more than anything.
Engagement sessions aren’t just about photos. They’re about building trust, getting comfortable together, and creating a space where couples can truly be themselves before the wedding day ever arrives.
By the end of the session, it didn’t feel like work – it felt like spending time with two people who are wildly in love and genuinely excited for what’s ahead.
One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is helping couples realize that photos don’t have to happen in a field at golden hour (even though those are beautiful too). Your engagement session can happen anywhere that feels like your story.
A favorite bar.
A record shop.
Your kitchen.
The place where you had your first date.
A quiet bookstore.
A late-night diner.
The location matters less than the feeling, and Wonder Bar gave Megan and James the perfect place to just be together. They laughed, they stayed close to keep warm between shots, and the whole session felt effortless. The kind of effortless that only comes from being deeply comfortable with the person beside you.

As I finished editing their gallery during another quiet snow day, I kept thinking about how perfectly this session fit them. Some stories just belong in certain places. This one belonged here.
